Massive explosion in Mosta fireworks factory .

A massive explosion was felt throughout Malta this afternoon August 13, 2010 at circa 14.55. Reports of smoke in the vicinities of the Mosta outskirts and up to four further blasts were immediately reported . It has since been confirmed that the Mosta 15th August fireworks factory blew up, but it is as yet unknown whether there are any casualties.

The 15th August fireworks factory is located in Dwejra, above and behind the Hardrocks site, across the main road to Mgarr from the San Anton and San Andrea private schools.

The Times of Malta reports one man believed to be dead, and others still missing. A video has also been posted online.

Maltatoday reports a man, Mario Dimech, should have been at the factory at the time it blew up. Calls to his mobile phone are proving futile.

Update 17:45

Maltatoday reports Zaren Vassallo, President of the Mosta 15 August Band Club has confirmed Mario Dimech, 41, is still believed to be within the firework factory's debris. Mr Vassallo also dispelled rumours that more people were trapped inside.

Meanwhile Mosta's external feasts in celebration of Santa Marija this August 15th, have been cancelled.

Mario Dimech's corpse  was recovered from the fireworks factory earlier this morning.
